Rules of the competition

Anyone may enter the competition by completing the registration form and paying the entry fee of £10 although the organising committee (‘the Committee’) reserves the right to decline an entry from anyone who has been in the Committee’s view too closely involved with the organisation and planning of the event. The information given by applicants in the registration form will be treated as strictly confidential and will not be retained in any form after the competition comes to an end.

Payment of the entry fee may be made either at the Hungerford Bookshop at 24 High Street, Hungerford or by PayPal (see the Homepage for guidance). Payment at the Hungerford Bookshop may be made in cash, by cheque payable to Hungerford Chamber of Commerce or by debit or credit card. Once paid, an entry fee cannot be refunded save in exceptional circumstances at the Committee’s discretion. .

The first set of four clues to the competition (there will be twelve in all) may be collected by the contestant in person from the Hungerford Bookshop or emailed or posted to the contestant within 3 working days of payment of the entry fee (please specify on the application form which method you would prefer). The release date for the first set of clues is 24th June 2009. The second and third set of clues will be released on 24th July and 24th August respectively.

Eleven out of the twelve clues will direct the contestant to specific locations in and around Hungerford and will provide instructions as to what to look for when you get there. The final clue will lead you to the Keeper of the Jewel and will consist of one or more questions which you will need to answer when you meet him. The first person who answers all the clues correctly will be the winner of the competition.

In each and every case, answering the clues will be a matter of skill and judgement and deduction – there is no luck or chance involved. No special knowledge of Hungerford or its geography or history is required.

Each of the locations to which contestants will be directed in the clues is open to members of the public. No access to privately-owned land will be required and the Committee therefore accepts no responsibility for any trespass or other unauthorised access.

The profits derived from the competition will be applied by Hungerford Chamber of Commerce towards paying the costs and expenses of the Hungerford Victorian Extravaganza, which is the annual December street fair organised by the Chamber. This provides many local charities and good causes with an opportunity to raise funds and publicise their activities in the locality.

At any time contestants may contact us for any guidance or clarification they may reasonably require, or for duplicate copies of any clues which may have been mislaid – see ‘Contact Us’ on the homepage.
